Getting Utilities turned on or off in New Orleans

What you need to know to get services turned on and off the easy way

Electricity and Gas

New Orleans has one utility company called ENTERGY. They have the monopoly on electricity and gas. When getting services turned on or off in your name, it can sometimes be easy, sometimes a challenge in incompetence..so be ready!

Have the following on hand:

1) Your social Security number or EIN#.

2) Last address.

3) The meter number of the location you are turning power on or off.

4) If there is gas service being turned on or off, an adult will have to be at the property. Sometimes when you have a gas water heater, need to make sure when service is turned on, someone is there to light that fire so there isn't a fire if you get my drift!

Water, Sewer and Garbage

The Sewage and Water Board of New Orleans takes care of all the three big services on one bill.

In the past they have been notorious for random super high billing and super dysfunctional moronic means and methods of "he said / she said" conversations that will drive you nuts.

With this said, it is best to GO IN PERSON to put the billing in your name. Trust me, in person, look at the white of their eyes, old school, with your:

1)Drivers License or equivalent Government issued ID.

2) Proof of Ownership and or a Lease.

3) Your first and second born as a sacrifice in case you forget #1 and or #2.

These folks are getting alot better and have even automated some of their processes into the 20th century..so don't be in a hurry, and don't evern THINK about doing this process online. This is nola baby!

Cox Cable

This monopoly on cable in Orleans Parish is now one of several options, depending on what neighborhood you reside in.

Expect outrageous pricing so BEFORE you call them for service, check online for specials they are running or even call them and ask for:

  • specials for over a certain age

  • specials to bundle services

  • specials because you feel like it.

  • These specials are kind of like going to the casino...you may win, you may lose, but give it a whirl anyway.

OTHER NOTES TO SELF!!

Be VERY careful about when Cox is going to run new service to your place. They basically hire out this work to hungry contractors who only make money when they run cables. They will wrap cables around you on the way to the final destination...just to bill for more.

To avoid and minimize your cost and having to wait for 4 hours:

  • Check if you have cable at your place already and

  • Make sure they don't run cable all over your historic home like its some sort of Christmas lighting project. They love to make penetrations and leave them open so termites and other bugs can enter your abode.
